What is Exercise Therapy?

Blending fitness expertise with medical knowledge, our Exercise Therapy sessions provide a bespoke exercise session for individuals managing chronic conditions or who want to increase activity levels to improve general health.

These sessions are led by one our of expert therapists, qualified with a Sport Therapy or Sport Rehabilitation degree. Their detailed understanding of anatomy and physiology helps them prescribe a meaningful programme to meet an individual’s goals whilst prioritising safety and wellbeing.

The first session will start by taking a full medical history and goal setting. The therapist will then conduct a specific movement screen based on current activity levels. This screening tool assesses movement patterns, strength and stability. Highlighting the key areas and focuses for your future sessions and exercise programme. From the results the therapist will then provide a series of exercises to do at home to provide a taste of what future sessions will have in store.

Who is Exercise Therapy for?

Exercise Therapy can be beneficial as part of a rehabilitation programme, for those intimated by a gym setting and want 1:1 guidance from a medical professional. For older adults, wanting to keep active, strong with an emphasis on balance and flexibility, we have sessions called Strength and Balance.

Aged 70+ - staying strong, steady and independent

These sessions are called Strength and Balance. With age, comes a loss of muscle tone and changes in balance, strength and walking ability. Our gentle, one-on-one Exercise Therapy sessions are ideal for older adults who want to:

  • Stay independent at home
  • Improve balance and reduce fall risk
  • Walk more confidently and safely
  • Manage conditions like Parkinson’s disease, Arthritis or Diabetes
  • Maintain strength and energy for everyday life

Each session is tailored to your current ability, and we always prioritise your comfort and safety. We’ll assess how you move, talk about your goals, and create a program that’s right for you – in our fully equipped private rehabilitation gym. We will also give you a plan to follow at home.

Aged 60+ - strength, fitness and healthy aging

Often recommended for those aged 60+ who are looking to:

  • Improve general strength and energy levels
  • Lose weight safely
  • Build confidence using gym equipment
  • Get moving again after a period of inactivity
  • Stay healthy and active as they age

Whether your goal is to feel better, move more easily, or prevent future health problems, we’ll provide the structure and support to make it happen – in a friendly, relaxed environment that builds confidence and motivation.

Active Adults (40+) - ongoing maintenance and injury prevention

If you’ve completed a rehabilitation programme for a long-standing musculoskeletal condition and want to maintain or build on those results, our Exercise Therapy can help you:

  • Stay on top of old injuries or flare-ups
  • Improve strength, flexibility, and posture
  • Move more freely in sport or daily life
  • Keep active while managing chronic conditions

Whether it’s your back, knees, shoulders or something else — we’ll tailor your program based on your needs, goals, and medical history. Ideal for those managing conditions like chronic back pain, joint issues, or wanting a prevention plan to avoid getting injured again.

Is Exercise Therapy similar to Personal Training?

Exercise Therapy can also be known as Clinical Personal Training. Clinical personal training with a qualified sport therapist or sport rehabilitation specialist goes way beyond the standard level of personal training by integrating advanced clinical knowledge of anatomy, biomechanics, injury prevention and rehabilitation. Our clinicians are experts in managing musculoskeletal conditions and age-related changes, allowing patients to build up strength in a safe and controlled way and being challenged when appropriate.

What our Patients say...

Thank you Synergy you helping me to climb the stairs again. Sounds like a simple thing but it has made a big difference to my life. I have had 2 hip replacements and I live in a town house with two flights of stairs and for the last 12 months I have been going up one step at a time.

Mrs Pauline Green

Thanks to the Synergy Physio team my knee pain has now gone. It was really bad whenever I put weight on it, going upstairs was agony. In my mid 70’s, I feared it heralded a possible operation. The team reassured me this was not the case and after 3 sessions, passed me on for some rehab.

M. Johnson

After several months of pain and a tendon release operation I had one goal, to get back into the gym and resume my workouts. With physiotherapy and rehabilitation work I finally went back to the gym this week, pain free! Thank you very much!

D Hope

Amazing place quaint but very well kept, air-conditioning as well. People friendly staff amazing location near parking. Gym well equipped.

Tackling the ice and slippery surfaces in winter. Balance and weak legs – can anything be done?

Posted on January 13th, 2025 in Article, Hip and Groin Pain, Synergy Physiotherapy.
With the cold, wet and icy weather, surfaces can become more slippery and the risk of falling increases. This can be exacerbated with shorter days and darker evenings where icy patches on pavements are harder to see. Injurious falls, including 70,000 hip fractures annually, are the leading cause of accident-related...
