Strength and Balance for Older Adults

Strength and Balance for Older Adults

As we age, staying active becomes one of the most powerful ways to maintain independence, reduce the risk of injury, and improve overall quality of life. But knowing how to move safely – especially with joint pain, stiffness, or chronic conditions – can be daunting which is where Strength and Balance at Synergy Physio comes in.

We’re proud to launch our Strength and Balance service at both our Woking and Egham clinics, tailored specifically for older adults who want to build strength, move with confidence, and enjoy better health.

What are Strength and Balance sessions?

These sessions combine fitness and medical knowledge to support individuals through safe, structured movement. Whether you’re managing a condition like arthritis, Parkinson’s disease, or diabetes, recovering from surgery, or simply feeling less steady on your feet, our sessions are designed to meet you where you are.

Each session is led by qualified professionals with backgrounds in Sports Therapy or Sport Rehabilitation. This means we have the expertise to help improve:

  • Strength and stamina
  • Balance and coordination
  • Joint mobility and flexibility
  • Gait and walking patterns

We tailor every programme to your individual needs and goals—whether that’s getting up from a chair more easily, walking further without discomfort, or simply feeling more in control of your body.

Why Strength Training Matters for Older Adults

Contrary to popular belief, strength training isn’t just for the young or athletic. In fact, it’s vital as we get older. With age, we naturally lose muscle mass and bone density—but regular, guided strength work can:

  • Reduce the risk of falls and fractures
  • Improve posture and ease joint pain
  • Boost metabolism and support weight management
  • Increase energy levels and daily function

Our approach ensures these benefits are delivered safely, with an emphasis on gradual progress and personal comfort.

How Is It Different from Personal Training?

Unlike standard gym-based personal training, Strength and Balance is clinically informed. Our therapists understand the complexities of long-term conditions, common pathology, and age-related physical changes. We know how to challenge you without overloading you, using techniques backed by evidence and experience.

We also work closely with other health professionals if needed, ensuring a joined-up approach to your care.

Who Can Benefit?

You might benefit from Strength and Balance if you:

  • Feel unsteady or have a fear of falling
  • Want to regain strength after an illness or operation
  • Have a long-term condition like Parkinson’s disease, arthritis, or diabetes
  • Would like to feel more mobile, flexible, or energetic
  • Want to exercise – but don’t know where to start

We welcome all fitness levels and abilities. You don’t need to be fit to begin—just ready to take the first step.
