The beauty of running, whether you’re a leisurely park jogger, a competitive event runner or a serious marathon addict, is that you can just put on your running shoes and go for it.

But it’s also high impact so it’s important to make sure you’re not running in a way that will cause or compound niggling injuries that could eventually force you to quit the sport you love.

What are the benefits of running?

Running is excellent for overall fitness and heart health. Whether you run at moderate speeds or are trying to win races, running burns off calories and helps you to maintain a healthy weight. It also works and tones the leg muscles and core abdominals making you stronger and leaner.

A regular running workout strengthens your bones and joints, which can help to stave off some of the problems that come with the ageing process, such as weakened bones and stiff joints. And it can have a hugely positive effect on your mental wellbeing – running gives you a rush of feel-good endorphins sometimes described as “the runner’s high”.

Running is also a great way to switch off your brain and have some meditative time away from the chaos of life and work.

What is a running technique coach?

Walking and running seem like the most natural activities in the world but many of us unconsciously develop bad habits, such as an uneven gait. This can leave you with a running technique that can slow you down, cause you unnecessary pain and put you at greater risk of injury.

A running coach can help you with your technique and advise you on the best ways to reach your running goals, giving you the tactics, motivation and support to keep going forward.

Your running technique coach can make a video analysis of how you move and draw up a bespoke training programme for you to correct any problems.

At the Synergy Running & Movement Centres in Woking and Egham, Surrey, our running coaching programmes can help you to:

  • Run faster, stronger and smarter with the help of bespoke advice from exceptional running technique coaches
  • Find out how it feels to run with a technique that gives you a quicker pace without increasing effort (and helps to keep fatigue at bay)
  • Feel secure you’re doing everything you can to achieve personal bests and comfortably beat target times
  • Experience the thrill of running at the very top of your game
  • Feel confident you’re giving yourself the best chance of running injury free
