If you haven’t had a sports massage before, you might be wondering what to expect from your appointment. Every appointment will vary slightly as therapists tailor all sessions to the individual and the time that has been booked. This blog will cover everything you need to know about having a sports massage at Synergy Physio.
Initial Assessment
To begin with, your sports massage therapist will start with an Initial assessment to understand why you are seeking treatment and to understand your medical history. You will be asked a series of questions, some of which may include:
- Current pains and injuries
- Previous injuries, accidents or operations
- What your lifestyle is like; work, hobbies, activity level
- Medical conditions and medications.
This information is vital and helps your therapist tailor the treatment to your needs and ensures that it is safe to proceed with the session.
They will then carry out a quick physical objective assessment. This may include assessing:
- Range of movement
- Posture
- Strength
- Gait and movement patterns
- Special tests
This can help identify limitations and what could be causing your symptoms.
During the Massage
Your sports massage therapist will have determined in the initial assessment which area and muscles of the body need attention.
Depending on your needs and goals, their techniques can vary. Each of our sports massage therapists are highly trained and skilled at what they do and will tailor each appointment to you and your needs. They will check in with you on how the pressure is feeling throughout. Unlike a relaxing spa massage, sports massages can sometimes feel uncomfortable, but each therapist will work with you to work within your comfort levels.
After your Treatment
Once your massage session has ended, your sports massage therapist will provide advice following treatment and give you support moving forward.
It is very common after a sports massage to feel relaxed but also sometimes you may feel soreness which can last up 24 – 48hrs. This is a normal response from your body as it reacts to the treatment.
